The construction of a water pipeline in Mykolaiv that will provide the city with centralized water is in its final stages, with the launch scheduled for Independence Day on August 24.
This was reported by the head of the Recovery Agency, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.
Recently, the water supply stations have been lifted, a key step in stabilizing the city's water supply. The work is to be completed by August 20 so that the water supply system can operate at full capacity by the holiday. This will provide Mykolaiv with water for both domestic and industrial needs. After the water pipeline is put into operation, the Reconstruction Agency plans to use the remaining resources to build water pipelines in other regions of Ukraine.
The new water pipeline will ensure a stable supply of treated water for more than 500,000 residents of Mykolaiv who have been experiencing a shortage of quality drinking water since May 2022. As a reminder, in April 2022, Russian troops destroyed a water pipeline that supplied water from the Dnipro River. As a result, the city was left without water supply, and later the network was supplied with salt water from the estuary, and then with river water of poorer quality.
The system is being restored with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Cabinet of Ministers has already allocated UAH 125.5 million from the reserve fund for water supply. Initially, the construction work was carried out by several companies that had previously received large-scale government contracts, including Avtostrada, Rostdorstroy, and Ukrtransmist. However, criminal proceedings were opened against some contractors, so they were changed.
