Mykolaiv has announced an open all-Ukrainian architectural competition for the best project proposal for the restoration of the Officers' Assembly complex. This is an architectural monument of national importance located in the central district of the city.
The decision to hold the competition was made by the executive committee of the Mykolaiv City Council.
The restoration is commissioned by the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning. Its head, Yevhen Polyakov, noted that this is not just a historic building, but a symbol of community unity in difficult times.
According to the chief architect, this is the well-known Fleet Officers' House, a place that united people in helping civilians affected by the war.
According to Polyakov, this building is a source of physical and spiritual recovery, but it is currently being destroyed.
"This is a monument of national importance and our city needs it," emphasized Yevhen Polyakov.
The official also noted that the process of restoring the architectural monument is complex and lengthy. Currently, the competition program is being prepared, and the jury has been agreed upon. The jury will include representatives of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine, including Olena Oliynyk, director of the Potocki Palace in Ivano-Frankivsk, Doctor of Architecture, as well as international experts.
The competition aims to find the best solution for preserving the historic building and its new meaning for the community.
In addition, Mykolaiv has decided to buy a tram substation, an architectural monument of local significance. It is a historic building that symbolizes the beginning of electric transportation in the city in the early 20th century. The building is currently owned by Aval Bank and needs to be repaired. The city is considering turning it into a new public or cultural space.
The city has also started restoration work at the Mykola Arkas Lyceum, which was damaged by a missile attack on the night of November 1, 2022. With the support of the Danish government, the first stage of reconstruction is underway - stabilization work. Emergency structures are being dismantled and new ones are being erected.
