A construction materials recycling plant has been launched in Mykolaiv in a test mode, an important step toward the city's sustainable recovery.
According to the mayor of the city, Oleksandr Senkevych, the history of this project began last year.
"Thanks to close cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mykolaiv received special equipment. Next came the training of our employees, the arrangement of the territory, and the first tests. And today the plant is fully operational, " said the mayor of Mykolaiv.
According to Sienkiewicz, the construction remains of the buildings destroyed by the Russians will now be brought to the plant, where they will be processed into crushed stone of various fractions.
"This project is important in many ways. First and foremost, it is environmentally friendly. We don't take this garbage out and bury it somewhere in quarries or in some gullies. On the contrary, we take it to this enterprise centrally and process it into building materials. Secondly, it is economical. This is the so-called recycling economy, when what we receive as garbage is recycled and can be used, for example, in road construction, " said the mayor.
Mykolaiv has started modernizing its solid waste management and sorting systems. The Supreme Court of Ukraine ordered the city council to take certain measures due to the fact that it was delaying the construction of a sorting station.
The executive committee reallocated funds for the development of a feasibility study for the construction of a waste recycling station back in March. In September, members of the Standing Committee on Human Rights, Children, Family and Legality discussed the initiative to create a complex for sorting household waste in Mykolaiv. In October 2024, a tender was announced to select contractors to build the sorting station.
The reason for the lawsuit was the failure of the city council to implement the targeted program for household waste management adopted in 2019. As a result, the landfill, which has been operating since 1972, exhausted its resources in 2022. However, Mykolaiv City Council tried to avoid responsibility for clear court decisions by filing a cassation appeal with the Supreme Court.
