Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine have passed a law on renaming cities in Odesa and Mykolaiv regions.
This was announced by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko.
The Rada renamed Yuzhnoukrainsk in Mykolaiv region to Pivdenoukrainsk. The Rada also renamed Yuzhne, Odesa district, Odesa region, to Pivdenne.
According to the MP, he was a co-author of this resolution.
The issue of renaming the city of Pivdenne in Odesa Oblast was discussed by the deputies in early October. Initially, the name Port-Anental was proposed, but during the discussion it was changed to Port-Anental, with the letter "n" doubled.
In addition to Pivdenne, Pervomaisk and Yuzhnoukrainsk in Mykolaiv region were included in the list of cities to be renamed. According to draft law No. 12083, the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk will be renamed Gard. A bill to rename Pervomaisk to Olviopol was also submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.
New draft resolutions on renaming the city of Pervomaisk and Pervomaisk district have been registered recently. Thus, Resolution No. 12100 proposes to rename the city to Bohoslavsk. The place name came in third in the voting among the population of Pervomaisk.
The Verkhovna Rada also renamed 26 villages and towns in Odesa Oblast. MPs adopted the relevant resolution on September 19. In total, they changed the names of 300 settlements in Ukraine that were subject to the law on decolonization.
On the second attempt, the Verkhovna Rada finally passed a resolution to rename more than 300 settlements as part of decommunization. 281 MPs voted in favor of this. In particular, 18 settlements were renamed in Mykolaiv region.
In June, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine rejected a proposal to keep the old names of some settlements. The Verkhovna Rada Committee on the Organization of State Power, Local Self-Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning rejected the proposal of the subcommittee on decolonization to cancel the renaming of the cities of Yuzhne and Yuzhnoukrainsk in Odesa and Mykolaiv regions.
