In Mykolaiv, 27 monuments were removed from the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine as part of the decolonization process.
This was reported by Olena Buberenko, head of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration.
According to the official, 11 monuments of national importance in the Mykolaiv region were included in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. However, 27 monuments of Mykolaiv, which were registered with the state before the Law of Ukraine on the Protection of Cultural Heritage came into force, have lost their status and are no longer subject to entry in the State Register.
This is part of the process of decolonization," said Buberenko.
Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also passed a law on renaming cities in Odesa and Mykolaiv regions. The Rada renamed Yuzhnoukrainsk in Mykolaiv region to Pivdenoukrainsk. The Rada also renamed Pivdenne, Odesa district, Odesa region, to Pivdenne.
In August, Mykolaiv created a visualization of new street names as part of the decolonization process. A total of 153 objects were renamed, including streets, lanes, descents, and squares. Many of the new names also commemorate prominent residents of the city and the region or recognize international partners of Ukraine and Mykolaiv for their support.
In July, the city planned to remove two Soviet monuments from the State Register - a monument to Oleksandr Hmyryov and a monument to the fighters for the power of the Soviets. This is due to the fact that they symbolize the communist totalitarian regime, and such symbolism is prohibited in Ukraine under the law on decommunization.
Also, activists ofthe Decolonization of Ukraine civic movement published a list of 100 monuments in the country that they believe should be dismantled. 14 sculptures are located in Odesa region. There are five monuments to Pushkin on the list: on Prymorskyi Boulevard in Odesa, near the museum of the same name on Pushkinska Street in Odesa, in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, as well as in Bolhrad and Tatarbunary.
