Crimean resident Kurtamet received 7 years for 500 UAH - new details

Crimean citizen Appaz Kurtamet, sentenced by a Russian court to 7 years in prison on charges of "financing the Armed Forces of Ukraine", was transferred to the strict regime penal colony VK-6 in the Pskov region of Russia.

This was reported by his mother, Ayşe Kurtamet, on her Facebook page.

Ayşe noted that Appaz has already arrived at the colony, where he will stay until the end of his sentence. She urged those who care to write letters to her son, as it supports his morale, distracts him from the limited communication in prison and helps him cope with isolation.

Appaz Kurtamet was detained in July 2022 on the administrative border between Kherson region and Crimea during his trip to visit relatives. Communication with him was cut off after passing the Russian checkpoint. Russian security forces accused him of transferring 500 hryvnias to an acquaintance, who, as it became known later, was a member of the Crimea battalion.

On April 20, 2023, the Kyiv District Court of Simferopol, established under Russian control, found Kurtamet guilty of "financing the AFU" and sentenced him to 7 years in prison. At the end of August 2023, the Supreme Court of Crimea, also controlled by Russia, upheld the verdict.

Since his detention, Kurtamet has been held in several places, including Nizhny Novgorod, and only recently was transferred to a colony in the Pskov region.

The prisoner's mother calls for support with letters that can be sent either directly to the colony or through it to ensure their delivery.

As previously reported by Intent, Crimean journalists in Russian colonies have not received qualified medical care for years, although they have serious health problems.

Currently, among the 18 Crimean journalists illegally imp risoned by Russia, 17 are in prisons in Russia. Of these, 15 were sentenced to 19 years in prison.
