The forum "Media Literacy and Digital Safety of Children and Adolescents. Prevention and Protection" was held in Odesa on January 16.

The event was organized by the Odesa Wow NGO.

The forum included panel discussions in three sessions:

  • "Children Online: An Honest Conversation Without an Adult Filter". During this session, they discussed media literacy at school: what works and what doesn't? Key issues: gaps in school programs on media literacy and cybersecurity, how and why teenagers fall for fakes and dangerous chats, gaming and online chats: what attracts them and where is the risk limit. The moderator was Nikita Permyakov, a psychologist and head of the Mental Health Alliance, and the participants were students of Odesa schools, students of specialized universities, and representatives of the youth parliament. Panelists: teachers of media literacy at schools and universities, representatives of the penitentiary system, probation service, and juvenile prevention.
  • Panel discussion: "Protecting Youth in the Digital Environment: Challenges and Solutions" Moderated by Olena Kvasha, General Producer of Suspilne Odesa.
  • "Creativity against cyber risks". During this session, pupils and students presented their works (videos, games, interactives, practices). The topic was creative approaches to teaching media literacy.

Also during the forum, the Children's Academy of Public Broadcasting presented the quest room "Time Loop".

The term "media literacy" is derived from the terms "critical vision" and "visual literacy". Other terms used are technological literacy, information literacy, and computer literacy.

It should be noted that this is not the first media literacy forum in Odesa. At the end of March 2021, IzbirCom (as Intent was then called) and the Odesa Regional Organization of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine presented a training manual "Hostile Information Operations: New Dimensions, New Challenges, New Media" for students of journalism.

Also in January 2020, the Odesa Regional Organization of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, together with the Intent, held the II Regional Forum "Media Literacy. Regional Dimension", which took place on January 31.
