The Court of Appeals ordered the restoration of a historic site in Odesa

The Odesa City Council and the Infectious Diseases Hospital have been ordered to restore the circular wing of the city hospital, which is an architectural monument of national significance. The Court of Appeals ruled that the prolonged inaction of the property’s custodians was unlawful, as it had put the early 19th-century building at risk of collapse.

This was reported by the Odessa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Measures to carry out emergency repairs and preservation work are already being implemented. 

The building in question was constructed in the early 19th century based on a design by the renowned French architect Jean-François Thomas de Tomon. It covers an area of nearly 7,800 square meters. The architectural landmark is located in the city’s historic center and is protected by UNESCO.

Signs of deterioration in the historic building have been documented since 2006. In 2011, experts warned of the risk of losing part of the main structure. In 2024, another wall collapse occurred.

Previously, the Department of International Cooperation, Culture, and Marketing had suspended renovation work in the entrance hall of the building at 75 Novoselsky Street in central Odesa due to the presence of historic frescoes. According to the Odessa City Municipality’s press office, an inspection revealed that the workers had not removed the frescoes; on the contrary, they discovered them while carrying out the repair work.
