The Odessa City Council has installed metal detector walk-throughs, which visitors must now pass through before entering the council chamber.

Natalia Maltseva, press secretary for the Odesa City Council, commented to Intenta on the installation of metal detectors in City Hall.

As the press secretary noted, the equipment was installed for security reasons. The city council did not explain why the decision to install the walk-through metal detectors was made only now. Nor did the statement specify whether the increased security measures are linked to any specific security incidents.

Walk-through metal detectors are stationary security systems that detect metal objects on a person’s body without physical contact. They can help detect weapons and other metal objects that are prohibited from being brought into certain facilities. Such equipment is used in high-traffic areas, including airports, courthouses, shopping centers, educational institutions, and administrative buildings.

As Intent reported, Odesa has prepared an update to the city’s “Safe City Odesa” target program for 2020–2028. The proposed changes include adjusting the structure of implementing agencies, adapting measures to the conditions of martial law, and maintaining the program’s funding at nearly 4 billion hryvnias.

The program’s main objectives remain improving public safety, developing video surveillance and video analytics systems, and implementing modern solutions for responding to emergencies.
