Odesa received seven cogeneration units from Germany to create its own generation within the city. They are currently waiting for the components for their complete installation.
This was discussed during a meeting of the executive committee.
As Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov explained, these units are located to ensure the operation of neighborhood boiler houses. Their installation will make it possible to abandon the diesel generators that are currently used in boiler houses when the central power supply is cut off. This will reduce energy costs and increase the energy sustainability and environmental safety of the community.
According to the mayor, there are still several stages ahead: design, installation, and a long connection process. But Trukhanov is confident that the equipment will be installed by the next heating season.
"We are on time and doing everything in our power. As soon as we received the cogeneration units, they were installed. Now we are waiting for the components, but unfortunately, not all of them have arrived on time. This is a problem because manufacturers do not have time to produce these components," the mayor explained.
Last November, the first cogeneration unit was installed at one of Odesa's boiler houses.
Earlier, Deputy Mayor of Odesa Hanna Pozdnyakova told Intent.Insight that Odesa region is expecting to receive nine such machines under a UN project funded by the Japanese government. However, due to the lengthy procedure of approvals and tenders, which took place even at the level of the UN office in New York, the delivery of the equipment is delayed. The cogeneration machines are manufactured by the Austrian company Jenbacher, which won the tender. The production time for each machine is 8-10 months.
The cost of the project, including all related equipment, exceeds several billion hryvnias and is fully funded by Western partners.
