Mykolaiv has seen a sharp increase in the incidence of influenza and ARVI, and the level of infections is approaching the epidemic threshold. Most of the patients are children.
This was reported on the website of the Mykolaiv City Council.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the incidence rate in the city is currently 472.1 per 100 thousand people, which is only 2.3% below the epidemic threshold.
During the week of February 21-27, 2820 cases of influenza and ARVI were recorded in Mykolaiv, of which 1560 were children, including 345 children under 4 years old. In addition, 25 cases of coronavirus were laboratory confirmed. Compared to the previous week, the number of cases increased by 434, of which about 60% are children.
Despite the large number of patients, only 2.6% of them needed hospitalization due to complications, which amounts to 73 patients, including 51 children and 5 elderly people, one of whom had COVID-19. No fatalities were recorded.
The incidence in Mykolaiv region has already exceeded the epidemic threshold by 18.8%. As acute respiratory viral infections are particularly dangerous for children, it is important to seek medical attention at the first symptoms, such as fever, headache, weakness, cough or runny nose.
The city council gave advice on how to reduce the risk of getting sick: regular vaccinations, hand hygiene, a balanced diet and immunity, ventilation of rooms and avoiding contact with sick people. If a child is sick, he or she should not be sent to school or kindergarten until he or she is fully recovered.
Meanwhile, during the episode of "Intent.Insight" we discussed the epidemic situation in Odesa with Olena Kolodenko, director of the Primary Health Care Center №3.
