Bovine leukemia was detected on a farm in the village of Vesela-Dolyna, Bolhrad district, Odesa region.
According to the Bolhrad Regional State Administration, a meeting of the State Emergency Anti-Epizootic Commission was held in this regard. The meeting was attended by representatives of the district administration, police, the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, and the head of Budzhak village.
According to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, in November, 9 cattle were confirmed to have leukemia at the Communard SGS in the village of Vesela-Dolyna. As a result, the farm was declared unfavorable, and quarantine was imposed on its territory.
The Commission approved a detailed action plan to eliminate and prevent the disease. In particular, the veterinary services will carry out organizational, sanitary and special measures, and quarantine restrictions will be lifted only after two consecutive negative laboratory results.
The head of the Bolhrad District State Administration urged local farmers to promptly report suspected livestock diseases to veterinary institutions. At the same time, the commission gave instructions to agricultural enterprises, and discussed ways to solve the problems on the farm with the Budzhak village head.
Bovine leukemia is a viral disease that affects the hematopoietic system and causes tumors in animals. Infection occurs through contact with blood, bodily fluids, or infected instruments. The disease reduces milk yield, weight, and leads to culling of cattle, causing significant economic losses.
At an early stage, the disease is asymptomatic, but over time, enlarged lymph nodes, weakness, and tumors appear. Diagnosis is carried out by laboratory methods. There is no cure, so the main focus is on prevention: regular testing, isolation of infected animals, sterilization of instruments and pasteurization of milk for calves.
Meanwhile, an outbreak of African swine fever was recorded in the village of Komyshivka, which is part of the Safianivka village council.
Earlier, a case of African swine fever (ASF) was recorded in the village of Honorata, Podil district, Odesa region.
An outbreak of ASF was also recorded in the Mykolaiv region near the village of Pokrovka. A 5 km radius protection zone was established covering Pokrovka and a number of villages and hunting grounds.
