On Friday, the Constitutional Court of Romania decided to cancel the results of the first round of the presidential election held on December 1.
According to the report of the Constitutional Court of Romania, the government must now set a new date for the presidential election.
According to Digi24, the court also made public the motivation for its decision: after declassifying the documents provided at the CSAT meeting, the judges took into account their content and found that the electoral process during its duration and at all stages was flawed, with numerous inconsistencies and violations of electoral law that distorted the free and correctness of the electoral vote of citizens and equal opportunities for election contestants, affected the transparent and fair nature of the election campaign and neglected the legal norms on the
The winner of the first round, Kelin Georgescu, criticized the court's decision, calling it a coup d'etat.
"Today's decision of the Constitutional Court is not just a legal contradiction. In fact, it is an official coup d'etat. The rule of law is in an induced coma, and justice, subordinated to political orders, has practically lost its essence, it is no longer justice, but subordinated. There is no justice in such a state anymore, but we are basically talking about a simulacrum that betrays the principles of democracy, democracy is not subject to discussion," said Kelin Georgescu.
Kelin Georgescu is a non-partisan candidate who was previously a member of the nationalist Alliance for the Unification of Romanians. He is the former Executive Director of the UN Global Sustainable Development Index Institute in Geneva and Vaduz. From 2010 to 2012, he served as a Special Rapporteur at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. He is sometimes called a pro-Russian politician in the media.
In late November, the Romanian Central Electoral Bureau began a court-ordered recount of all ballots cast in the first round of the presidential election, following accusations that the winner, Kelin Gorgescu, had illegally used tiktok to boost his campaign.
