In Mykolaiv, officials have determined how many public educational institutions will be open during the 2026–2027 school year and how many children will attend them. At the same time, 27 kindergartens in the city have not yet resumed classes; their reopening depends on the ability to set up shelters.
The Mykolaiv City Council’s executive committee adopted the corresponding decision on October 14.
According to Hanna Lychko, head of the city council’s education department, there are 63 schools operating in the city: 39 gymnasiums, 22 lyceums, and two elementary schools. A total of 32,556 students, distributed across 1,111 classes, receive educational services at these schools.
Special and inclusive education programs have been organized for children who require additional support. Specifically, 202 students are enrolled in 22 special education classes, while another 718 children attend 424 classes with an inclusive educational model.
Lychko noted that the Mykolaiv Special School for Children with Visual Impairments remains a separate institution within the city’s education system. Its school division serves 130 students in 11 classes, while its preschool division serves 116 children in seven groups.
Preschool education in the city is provided by 43 kindergartens, attended by 7,387 children. These institutions have formed 383 groups. Among them, 42 kindergartens are of the combined type, and one belongs to the general-type institutions.
Inclusive education has been organized in 38 kindergartens. There are 189 groups operating there, with 389 children enrolled. At the same time, part of the preschool network remains closed. According to Lychko, as of September 1, the educational process had not resumed in 27 kindergartens and the preschool division of Elementary School No. 1.
As noted at the meeting, these institutions will be able to resume operations after their premises are inspected for suitability as basic shelters and after the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration approves the resumption of in-person instruction.
There are also seven extracurricular education institutions operating in Mykolaiv. They host 159 clubs and 470 groups, attended by a total of 6,583 students.
Meanwhile, 8,130 students from the Mykolaiv region are currently abroad; they remain enrolled in their local schools and are continuing their studies remotely. Additionally, 250 teachers are currently outside Ukraine.
