The Ochakiv secondary sanatorium boarding school is to be reorganized into a branch of the municipal Mykolaiv Regional Academic Lyceum "Renaissance" as part of the school network reform.

The relevant draft decision was considered at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Science and Education, Innovation, Youth, Family and Sports, Culture and Spirituality.

As explained by Alla Velikhovska, Director of the Department of Education, the reorganization is part of a nationwide reform, according to which all sanatorium boarding schools must be transformed or liquidated by July 1, 2025.

Currently, two such schools have already been re-profiled in the region and turned into academic lyceums. The Ochakiv school will be the third example of such a transformation.

According to Velikhovska, only grades 1 through 9 will be open at the branch, so some employees may be laid off. At the same time, the department assures that they will try to save jobs as much as possible.

The teaching staff of the institution agreed to the reorganization, as they believe it is the only way to avoid the complete liquidation of the institution, which is threatened by the termination of funding in July.

The draft decision has been legally finalized and is to be submitted to the regional council for final approval in the near future.

Earlier, during the monitoring of Voznesensk Special School in Mykolaiv region, several problems were identified: cramped bedrooms, lack of a sports ground and shortcomings in the social protection of orphans. The commission advised the regional authorities to take measures to improve conditions. Following the meeting, the Commission recommended that Mykolaiv Regional State Administration provide children with proper living and learning conditions.

And Mykolaiv City Council plans to amend the comprehensive program"Education" for 2025-2027. More than UAH 9 million is allocated to finance after-school care at schools. The main innovations include an increase in funding for school maintenance, support for after-school care and the development of gifted students.
