Off-the-shelf gaming PCs with liquid cooling systems (LCS) look cool and aesthetically pleasing, but the bright backlighting often hides a marketing gimmick.

Marketers present "water" as a mandatory attribute of a powerful system, keeping silent about the compromises. Let's see why a proven air cooler is a more reasonable and safe choice for a beginner.

The myth of undeniable superiority

The main argument in favor of RSOs is their supposedly phenomenal efficiency. In fact, most off-the-shelf builds include basic models with a single 120mm radiator. Their real performance is at best equal to a good tower cooler, and sometimes even inferior. At the same time, the noise of the fans is compounded by the constant hum of the pump, which can be very annoying in cheap systems. In the end, it turns out that a gaming computer with a cooler provides a better level of heat dissipation, while buyers get enough silence under load.

Reliability and service life are the main risks

Any RSO is a complex system with potential failure points. The main risk is a leak that can destroy expensive components such as a video card or motherboard. Even if it is small, its consequences are catastrophic.

In addition, the "dropsy" has a limited lifespan:

  • The pump wears out mechanically in 3-5 years;
  • the liquid gradually evaporates through the micropores of the hoses, reducing efficiency.

It's a kind of programmed aging that an air cooler is completely free of. Its radiator is practically eternal, and replacing the fan is a matter of a few minutes and a little money.

Why "air" is the smart choice

Air cooling wins in key respects. Its main advantage is absolute reliability, because there is simply nothing to leak or break, except for a penny fan. At the same time, modern "towers" can handle hot gaming processors without any problems, providing low temperatures. And the most important thing is the price. For the cost of a budget PSU, you can buy a high-performance cooler that will be quieter, more efficient, and will last for more than one system upgrade.

Conclusion: who really needs an RSO

Liquid cooling systems are not evil, but a niche tool. They are justified for enthusiasts of extreme overclocking or ultra-compact builds where there is no room for a large tower. But for a beginner looking for maximum performance and reliability for their money, a quality air cooler is the smartest and safest choice. Don't get caught in the trap of beautiful marketing.
