Although braces are perceived as something universal, there are also many varieties of them and, like every technique, wearing braces also has its advantages and disadvantages.
The specialists of the Lumi-Dent dental center told about them in detail.
The orthodontist's arsenal includes a large number of modern methods of bite correction. And despite the fact that dentistry is not limited to braces, they remain the most popular technology for teeth alignment. That is why every reputable dental clinic necessarily offers them.
What are the types of braces, what are the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of each type - in our article.
How braces differ from other orthodontic structures
Braces are "locks" on the teeth through which a metal arch is threaded. The design is created according to an individual impression of the patient's jaw, and constantly acts on the dentition, moving it in the right direction.
Several decades ago, braces in Kyiv became an excellent alternative to retention structures, because
- they work faster (in 12-18 months);
- they work more gently;
- do not require removal.
Today, almost every dental clinic also offers an alternative to braces - transparent aligners, which are made as a whole set and need to be changed every two weeks. Even this technology has advantages over braces:
- more reliable results even without wearing a mouth guard in the future;
- the ability to cope even with complex bite defects;
- significantly lower cost.
That is why braces are an optimal and understandable solution for most patients.
Types of braces
Although the principle of braces is the same for all types of braces, the patient can choose a system made of a suitable material:
- Metal braces are the most reliable, time-tested, durable, and effective. At the same time, they are quite visible, which may stop some patients from wanting to correct their bite.
- Ceramic braces are snow-white, blend in with the shade of natural enamel and make even a metal arch less visible. They are quite durable, but not quite suitable for complex cases of teeth straightening.
- Sapphire braces are transparent, shiny, and as invisible as possible. Because of this, they are more expensive. In addition, this design is more fragile, and it is necessary to wear it for up to three years due to the slower alignment effect. But it is as gentle as possible.
There are also lingual structures that are attached to the inner surface of the teeth. They are completely invisible, however:
- they are not suitable for complex cases of correction;
- are made only of metal and ceramics;
- can slightly change diction.
