Oscar winner Danis Tanović was honored at the Odessa International Film Festival

Director and screenwriter Danis Tanović was a special guest at the 17th Odessa International Film Festival. Film festival president Viktoria Tigipko presented him with a special Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to world cinema.

While presenting the award to Danis Tanović, the festival president noted that he reminded the world that war is not just numbers and chronology, but the fear, choices, and dignity of specific people. 

Your films have received the highest international honors, including an Oscar. To Ukrainian filmmakers working in the midst of war, your journey sends a clear message: don’t wait for history to end before you start talking about it,” said Viktoria Tigipko.

The film “No Man’s Land” (2001) by Bosnian director Danis Tanović is an anti-war movie set in the center of a trench between Bosnians and Serbs during the war of the 1990s.

The film gained worldwide recognition as one of the most powerful cinematic manifestos against the senselessness of war. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, a Golden Globe, and the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes. Tanović wrote the screenplay based on his own experiences as a documentary filmmaker on the front lines.

Over the course of eight days, attendees of the Odesa International Film Festival will be able to watch more than 80 films across 10 programs. 

In August, the Odesa Film Festival announced its program for industry professionals.The Film Industry Office will run from August 28 to September 3 and will bring together Ukrainian and international film industry representatives.
