The case of the driver accused of causing a traffic accident that left 12 people dead on a highway in the Mykolaiv region has been referred to court. The man faces up to 10 years in prison.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The accident occurred on July 4, 2026, on the M-14 highway “Odesa–Melitopol–Novoazovsk” near Shchaslyve. According to the investigation, while passing another vehicle, the driver of a Nissan created a hazard for an oncoming Mercedes-Benz.

To avoid a head-on collision, the Mercedes-Benz driver swerved onto the shoulder. The car rolled over and was then thrown into the oncoming lane, where it collided with a Volvo truck.

The driver and 11 passengers of the minibus were killed in the accident. Four other people were injured, including a 15-year-old girl.

After the accident, the Nissan driver fled the scene. Law enforcement officers later tracked him down and detained him.

The man has been charged under Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of traffic rules resulting in the death of several people.

He is currently being held in custody without the right to bail.

If the court finds him guilty, he will face 5 to 10 years in prison. In addition, he may be barred from driving for up to three years.

Prosecutors have filed an indictment with the court—a document outlining the charges.

As Intent previously reported, a day of mourning was declared in the Mykolaiv region the day after the fatal accident. Among the victims were employees of “Mykolaivelektrotrans” and their relatives.
