Police in Odesa have opened a criminal investigation into the explosion in the Peresypskyi district of the city and detained a man who almost blew up a married couple with a grenade.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Police Department in Odesa Oblast.

The incident occurred on April 11. It was around 20:00. The special line 102 received a report of an explosion caused by a grenade in one of the apartments on Heroiv Oborony Street in Odesa.

During the initial investigation, police found that the day before, a 36-year-old local resident had met a 37-year-old native of another region on the street and invited him home, having learned that he had no place to spend the night. In the apartment where the Odesa resident lives with his 19-year-old common-law wife, the guest pulled out a grenade he had brought with him and pulled out a check. The cohabitants managed to run out of the apartment before the explosion occurred, and the bomber injured his leg.

While checking the house for explosives, the police seized fragments of a fragmentation hand grenade of impact and remote action from the scene and sent them for examination.

The man was detained - according to preliminary medical reports, at the time of the crime, the man was in a state of alcohol and drug intoxication. He had previously come to the attention of law enforcement for committing domestic violence, for which he was brought to administrative responsibility. Investigators have now classified his actions as illegal acquisition, storage and carrying of ammunition without a legal permit.

The information was registered in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives). The issue of serving a notice of suspicion and choosing a form of detention is currently being decided. During the pre-trial investigation, which is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Suvorov District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa, the police will establish where the man got the ammunition and why he blew it up.

If found guilty, the detainee faces up to seven years in prison.
