A man who tried to set fire to a military man's apartment in Odesa faces up to 10 years in prison

A 25-year-old resident of Odesa district is accused of a completed attempt to intentionally damage someone else's property by means of arson under Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
This was reported by the press service of the National Police.
The man set fire to the apartment of the serviceman's family, fulfilling a "task" from an unknown person. Law enforcement officers found that the suspect was recruited by Russian special services.
In one of the high-rise buildings in the Prymorskyi district of Odesa, an unknown person attempted to set fire to an apartment. This was reported to the police by the wife of a serviceman, who, having smelled smoke, extinguished the fire. No one was injured.
After meeting a girl in a messenger and communicating with her, the man received a call from a stranger. The stranger, posing as a law enforcement officer of Ukraine, said that the girl was a collaborator working for the aggressor state.
In fact, the stranger had nothing to do with Ukrainian law enforcement. He offered the interlocutor to "expose the traitor" - to find out her address and set fire to the apartment door. He promised to compensate him for the task, and the suspect was supposed to be detained.
After agreeing, he soon lured the girl's address, bought a flammable liquid, poured it on the front door of her apartment and set it on fire. He recorded his actions on video for "reporting purposes" and then fled the scene.
All of the defendant's interlocutors turned out to be participants in the same organized hostile scheme. He did not receive any promised reward for the task. Law enforcement officers detained the man under the current procedure.
The man faces up to 10 years in prison. The court ruled to take the suspect into custody with an alternative to bail. Investigative actions are currently underway to clarify all the circumstances of the offense. The Prymorskyi District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa is providing procedural guidance in the criminal proceedings.
