Police have completed an investigation into a 20-year-old man who set fire to a post office in Odesa on request. He faces up to ten years in prison.
This was reported by the press service of the National Police.
The incident occurred in early September in the Khadzhybey district of Odesa. The fire engulfed the facade of a post office located in a five-story residential building. Local residents saw the fire, put it out and reported it to the police.
As part of the criminal proceedings, the police found that the arson was committed by a 20-year-old man from Podilskyi district who lived in Odesa in a rented apartment.
The young man admitted that he had received an offer from an unknown person via one of the messengers to set fire to the post office for a reward. He agreed and received the address of the facility and some money for flammable liquid.
In the evening, the mercenary brought a canister of fuel to the door of the post office and set it on fire. He waited for a while, made sure there was a fire, and fled.
The young man videotaped the process of fulfilling the order for a report that he sent to his supervisor. But the arsonist never received the promised reward.
The fire damaged the front door, a canopy, a lantern, the floor and a signboard, causing the institution's management to incur material damage of over UAH 33 thousand.
The court imposed on the defendant a custodial measure of restraint with the right to be released on bail in the amount of UAH 242,240, which he did not use.
The indictment was sent to court. The offender faces imprisonment for up to ten years.
