Winter Fishing Safety Tips: Prevent Ice Accidents in Ukraine

Police officer Andriy Myroshnychenko conducted a preventive raid in the Voznesensk community to remind fishermen of the safety rules on water bodies in winter.

This was reported by the press service of the Voznesensk City Council.

The policeman warned of the danger of going out on thin ice and called for precautions. In particular, he recommended not to fish alone, not to drink alcohol near water bodies, and to use rescue equipment.

Before going out on the ice, it is necessary to check its thickness. For a single person to be safe, the ice should be no thinner than 7 centimeters, and for a group of people - at least 15 centimeters. You should choose warm, but not too heavy clothing that does not restrict movement, and have a rescue kit with you, which includes a rope and a sharp object for breaking through the ice.

While on a water body, you should check the strength of the ice with a stick, not with your foot, do not gather in large groups in one place, and place fishing holes at a distance of at least five to six meters from each other.

Since November 1, Ukraine has banned fishing in winter holes. However, winter fishing is allowed if it takes place outside such places, a winter fishing rod is used, and the total number of hooks per angler does not exceed seven.

At the same time, it is forbidden to use double and triple hooks without bait, as well as to fish by baiting. The daily catch limit is three kilograms plus one fish that exceeds the minimum allowable size.

The police urge citizens to be responsible for their own safety and follow the recommendations to avoid accidents.

Recently, divers found the bodies of two children who fell through the ice in Kherson region. The search for the body of the third boy continues.

The tragic accident occurred on February 13 in the village of Dovhe, Beryslav district. Four children from the same family - two boys aged 13 and 9 and two girls aged 14 and 12 - were playing on the frozen surface of the Ingulets River. However, the ice was too thin to hold and all of them ended up in the water.

Also, in a pond in Odesa region, police and rescuers spent several hours searching for three teenagers who had probably fallen through the ice.
