Vacationers killed by mine explosion in Odesa region

A mine explosion killed two people who were vacationing on a beach in Odesa region, and police have preliminarily classified the incident as an accident.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast.

According to law enforcement officials, it has been preliminarily established that two men were killed by an unknown object while swimming in the sea. The victims are currently being identified.

The investigative team of the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi District Police Department, specialists of the Explosive Service Department of the Main Department of the National Police in Odesa Region and employees of the State Emergency Service are working at the scene. The full circumstances of the incident are being established. It has not been officially reported which beach was the scene of the incident, but the media claim that it was one of the beaches in Zatoka.

Meanwhile, the Odesa Regional Military Administration has published a list of beaches that have been prepared for the opening of this holiday season. The beaches in Zatoka and Karolino-Buhaz have not been officially opened.

Mines are regularly brought to the coast of Odesa region by storms. On June 4, the military discovered and destroyed a mine on the Odesa coast.

However, the last reported deaths in Odesa region from a mine explosion on the coast were in August 2022. Two people were killed and one injured in a mine explosion in Zatoka, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district, Odesa region. Then a group of men, ignoring the proclaimed restrictions on visiting the coast and swimming in coastal waters, ignoring warning signs, organized a vacation with swimming on the beach. While swimming, an unknown explosive device killed two people on the spot and injured one.

In early July of the same year, an unidentified device exploded on a beach in the south of Odesa region. During a swim in the sea, one of the vacationers tripped an unidentified explosive device, and his body was pulled to the shore without signs of life. The second swimmer suffered concussion and light scratches, but refused hospitalization.

On June 11, 2022, a vacationer hit a mine while swimming in the sea on a beach in Odesa region. The man died on the spot from his injuries. The mine that killed the man was Russian.
