Scientists at the “Askania-Nova” Biosphere Reserve are implementing a unique audio project called “The Real Steppe, designed to preserve and recreate the acoustic diversity of Ukrainian steppe ecosystems. As part of the initiative, researchers are combining new recordings from territories under Ukrainian control with valuable archival audio materials from regions currently under Russian occupation, including the Askania steppe itself. The result of this work will be an unusual August exhibition that “cannot be seen, but can be heard.”

In July, Russian shelling sparked fires in the “Askania-Nova” Biosphere Reserve. Approximately 10,800 trees and other plants were destroyed there.
