The Russian authorities have authorized the construction of a new dormitory building for a sanatorium on Cape Ai-Yuri near Foros in occupied Crimea. The project envisages the construction of a building with an area of more than 8.5 thousand square meters, which may lead to the felling of trees and shrubs in the reserve.

This was reported by Krym.Realii.

The beginning of preparatory work was reported by the press service of the Russian government with reference to Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin. According to him, the new building is designed for 131 rooms and will be able to accommodate more than 250 guests, and the construction is planned to be completed by 2028. The construction permit was issued by the Russian-controlled Ministry of Housing Policy and State Construction Supervision of Crimea.

The construction will take place on the territory of a sanatorium complex located between the villages of Foros and Mellas, in close proximity to the sea. This area is known as one of the least disturbed places on the Southern coast of Crimea, with a unique landscape and rich flora, where dozens of species of exotic and relict trees grow.

At the same time, the State Duma of the Russian Federation registered a draft law that allows any areas to be removed from the status of specially protected natural areas for the sake of development. Against this background, environmentalists and local residents expressed concern about the future of the natural areas of the southern coast of Crimea.

The sanatorium was built in 1979 and in Soviet times had the status of an elite health resort for the party nomenklatura. After the annexation of Crimea, it came under the control of the Russian Ministry of Finance and is now a branch of a federal budgetary institution.

Last September, Ukrainian drones attacked the eliteForos sanatorium in occupied Crimea. At that time, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine sent almost 115 Ukrainian drones to the territory of Russia and the peninsula. There are four state dachas between Foros and Yalta, where the political elite traditionally visit. According to media reports, Putin occupied the sixth and eighth dachas, but it is claimed that he was not there, and only Russian officials could have been present.
