New details have emerged about the shooting in Mykolaiv—the two foreigners who were killed, as well as the man who shot them, had served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This was reported by the Spanish newspaper El País.

As the publication notes, the victims and the suspect in their murder were members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“The Chilean soldier will face Ukrainian justice and await trial,” writes El País.

If found guilty, the soldier faces a sentence ranging from 15 years to life in prison.

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet released any information regarding the situation involving this Chilean citizen, whose identity has not been established. There are also no known details about any measures taken in this case.

Earlier, Intent reported that the shooting took place on June 30 on Heroes of Ukraine Avenue in Mykolaiv.

According to investigators, three men were in an Opel when a shot was fired. Witnesses stated that the victims were in the front seats, while the suspect was in the back.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the shooting, which killed the 39-year-old driver and his 33-year-old passenger—both Colombian citizens—was initiated by a Chilean national.

As for the motive behind the attack, initial reports suggest a fight may have broken out among the men in the car.

After his arrest, the suspect took a breathalyzer test, which revealed a blood alcohol level of 2.29 grams per liter.

Police also seized three firearms found inside the car and collected other ballistic evidence.

According to “MykVisti,” on July 3, the Central District Court of Mykolaiv ordered pretrial detention for Chilean citizen Rodrigo Sebastián Toro Carvajal, who is suspected of murdering two friends. He was remanded in custody until August 29 without the right to bail.

Rodrigo Sebastián Toro Carvajal himself has not admitted guilt.

“I am not guilty. I need to keep working. I couldn’t have killed my comrades—we had a good relationship. I came to Ukraine not for money, but to defend it,” the publication quotes the suspect as saying.
