In Odesa, a court extended the arrest of Serhiy Shalayev, who is on trial on charges of murdering civil society activist Demian Hanul. The prosecutor's office said that the risks of escape, concealment of information and obstruction of the investigation remain relevant.

This was reported by ZMINA.

On May 12, the Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa decided to extend the measure of restraint in the form of detention for Shalaev, who is accused of the premeditated murder of public figure Demian Hanul.

During the meeting, a representative of the Odesa Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office emphasized that the grounds for further arrest remain valid. According to the prosecutor, there is a risk that the accused may hide from the court and the investigation.

The prosecution also takes into account the case files already examined, the severity of the possible punishment and the impossibility of compensation for the damage caused.

The prosecutor's office said that Shalaev, according to the investigation, could have tried to obstruct the investigation, in particular by hiding information about the alleged clients of the crime and leaving the scene after it was committed. Prosecutors also drew the court's attention to the special training and skills of the accused.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 28 at 14:30.

On April 21, the trial in the case of the murder of public figure Demian Hanul did not reach the final stage. Despite the parties' readiness to start the court debate, the hearing was postponed to May following a request from the defendant's defense.

The victim's wife , Zhanna Voznyuk, regarded such actions as an attempt to delay the process. According to her, both the family and the prosecution were fully prepared for the final stage of the trial, but on the day of the hearing, the defense unexpectedly announced new circumstances that led to the postponement of the trial for more than a month.

Last year, on March 14, at about 10:30 a.m., in the center of Odesa, a man fired several shots at Demian Hanul. He died on the spot from his injuries.
