TCC employee detained for bribery tried in Odesa: what was the verdict?

A court in Odesa sentenced an employee of the TCC for extortion of a bribe during mobilization. The court decided not to severely punish the military officer, but to impose a fine.

This is stated in the decision of the Kyiv District Court of Odesa.

According to the case file, a junior sergeant, commander of one of the Armed Forces security units, abusing his official position, demanded a bribe from a citizen to avoid mobilization.

The incident occurred on May 29, 2024. While checking documents on an Odesa street, the sergeant asked the man to give him $4,000. In response, he promised not to hand over a mobilization notice and not to carry out any registration actions that could lead to the conscription of this citizen.

On June 6, 2024, the TCC employee, having agreed on a meeting place, received the first part of the bribe from the person liable for military service - USD 1000 near the Memorial to the Heroic Defense of Odesa. On June 11, he met with the citizen again and took another $1,000. However, after this transfer of money, law enforcement officers detained the suspect and seized part of the bribe.

During the trial, the TCC employee pleaded guilty and expressed sincere remorse. He explained that he had succumbed to temptation due to his difficult financial situation and repentantly appealed to the court, stating that he was aware of his actions and regretted what he had done. Among the mitigating circumstances, the court took into account the defendant's health condition, second-group disability resulting from a combat injury, and his full confession.

The court imposed a fine of UAH 80,750 (4,750 non-taxable minimum wages) on the military and banned him from holding positions related to military service for two years. In addition, he was ordered to pay court costs for expert examinations in the amount of UAH 12,116.

Recently, the Malynovskyi District Court of Odesa approved a plea agreement between a prosecutor of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office and an Odesa resident for obstructing the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations.
