Two underground schools have been opened in the Mykolaiv region to allow students to study offline even during a prolonged air raid. This was made possible with the support of the international charity savED, donors, business, and the international community.

This was reported by the press service of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration.

The first educational space, located in an underground shelter of a local lyceum, was presented in the de-occupied village of the Central Shevchenkivska community. The cost of the arrangement exceeded UAH 5.5 million.

The funds were raised with the help of international organizations, volunteers from the Netherlands and Ukrainian students abroad. Also, teenager Miloslav Tkach and his peers in the UK raised more than 10 thousand pounds.

In the village of Tsentralne, which has been under occupation for eight months, schoolchildren have not had the opportunity to study offline for four years due to the pandemic and war. Now they can get knowledge in a modern and safe shelter.

Another underground school was opened in Mykolaiv. This shelter of a local school, which was also renovated at the expense of philanthropists, has become a comfortable space for learning. The project, which cost more than UAH 4 million, was funded by partners from the United States - the American fast food chain KFC and the non-profit organization GlobalGiving.

Another modern school shelter is located in Zavodskyi district. This is a real underground school where more than 1200 children can study in two shifts. The entire space is divided into zones where classes can be held. It is also possible to hold extracurricular activities there. The shelter was equipped with appropriate equipment, high-quality furniture and everything necessary for the educational process.

In May, the Ministry of Education and Science approved a list of facilities to be financed by subventions from the state budget to create safe conditions in schools. UAH 2.5 billion was allocated for this purpose. In August, the Cabinet of Ministers approved additional funding for this area, bringing the total amount of subventions to UAH 7.5 billion. Part of this money will be used to finance new and already started construction of underground schools.
