Romania's Central Election Bureau has decided to reject the candidacy of Kelin Georgescu in the presidential election, which caused a clash between his supporters and local law enforcement.

Supporters of the pro-Russian candidate, who were in front of the CEB headquarters, began to get agitated and the intervention of gendarmes was required, Digi24 reports.

Ten members of the commission voted against the approval of Georgescu's candidacy, while four were in favor. Now he has 24 hours to appeal to the Constitutional Court, which has another 48 hours to make a decision. Thus, the final decision on the candidacy of Georgescu will be made by the court no later than Wednesday evening.

Earlier, the Romanian Constitutional Court rejected the complaints filed against the candidacy of Kelin Georgescu in the 2025 presidential election.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis resigned from his post ahead of a plan by far-right opposition parliamentary parties to impeach him. Prior to that, Romania's Supreme Court said that Iohannis, whose second and final term expired on December 21, should remain in office until his replacement is elected, after he canceled the presidential election due to suspected Russian interference.

On December 9, 2024, investigators seized seven million dollars from Bogdan Peschir, who financed the TikTok campaign of Calin Georgescu, after an all-night search of his residence in Brasov.

Romania's Supreme National Defense Council released declassified intelligence. They claim that Kelin Georgescu benefited from a coordinated social media campaign, most likely organized by a state actor.

Earlier, the Constitutional Court of Romania on Friday decided to cancel the results of the first round of the presidential election held on December 1. The winner of the first round, Kelin Georgescu, criticized the court's decision, calling it a coup d'etat.

In late November, the Romanian Central Election Bureau began a court-ordered recount of all ballots cast in the first round of the presidential election, following accusations that the winner, Kelin Georgescu, had illegally used tiktok to boost his campaign.
