Romania has begun purchasing electricity from Ukraine via Moldova

The Romanian state-owned company Nuclearelectrica has begun purchasing electricity from Ukraine with the support of the Moldovan supplier Energocom. This will help cover the shortfall caused by the shutdown of a nuclear power plant unit.

According to the company, the electricity imported from Ukraine is necessary to stabilize the Romanian market and cover the capacity shortfall.

The main cause of the shortage was the unplanned shutdown of Power Unit No. 1 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.

The situation in the regional power grid was further complicated by a drought. In particular, due to a lack of rainfall, the water level in the Danube River fell to extremely low levels, which significantly limited the capacity of local hydroelectric power generation and increased risks for the entire system.

The purchase of Ukrainian electricity is taking place with the direct involvement of the Moldovan supplier Energocom. Nuclearelectrica emphasized that the partnership between the companies has a long history and was officially formalized by a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023.

While Romania previously helped Moldova ensure energy security, the Moldovan side is now providing reciprocal support to maintain the stability of Romania’s National Energy System.
