Resident of Odesa region detained on suspicion of attempting to transport five men abroad

Police detained a resident of the Podil district of Odesa region on suspicion of assisting five men of military age in illegally crossing the state border of Ukraine.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa region.

The 42-year-old man was served a notice of suspicion and a pre-trial restraint was imposed on him. He faces imprisonment with confiscation of property. Investigators found that a resident of the Oknyanska community helped five men aged 25 to 34 from other regions to leave the country bypassing checkpoints in exchange for a monetary reward.

According to the plan developed by the currently unidentified accomplice of the resident of Oknya, the latter was supposed to wait for the clients at home, take them to the border and show them the further way to the neighboring country. The offender was to receive a reward after the transaction.

Implementing this plan, the offender took care to bring the men to the border, where they were all stopped by law enforcement officers. Border guards drew up reports against the passengers who were going to illegally cross the state border of Ukraine under Part 2 of Article 204-1 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. The violators face a fine or administrative arrest.

The police also seized the vehicles used to transport the clients as material evidence. The court arrested him. If proven guilty, the man faces imprisonment for up to nine years with disqualification to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years and confiscation of property.

The court has now imposed on the suspect a custodial measure of restraint with the right to be released on bail in the amount of UAH 242,240.
