Prosecutor of Mykolaiv District Prosecutor's Office Andriy Omelchenko was fired over a scandal involving extortion and indecent behavior. He was accused of trying to get $5,000 for not filing an appeal and influencing the verdict in a traffic accident case.

This was reported by Inshe.tv.

The Qualification and Disciplinary Commission of Prosecutors has decided to dismiss the prosecutor of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor's Office, Andriy Omelchenko. The decision was made on August 27, 2025, in connection with violations of ethics and the rule of law in his official activities.

In 2024, Omelchenko was involved in an accident case where a forklift driver fatally injured a man. He supported the state prosecution, and the court of first instance sentenced the perpetrator to three years in prison. However, Omelchenko did not appeal the verdict, and at the same time entered into an off-duty relationship with the defendant's lawyer's intern, who participated in the court hearings.

In August 2024, during a working day, the prosecutor and the trainee drove her car to the victim's family. There, she handed over 50 thousand hryvnias to the relatives so that they would have no complaints and sign an appeal asking the court to change the sentence to suspended. According to her, Omelchenko made indecent hints and sexual proposals to her during this trip.

About a week later, the prosecutor suggested that they meet late at night. To protect herself, the intern recorded the conversation. During the more than 40-minute conversation, Omelchenko described how he demanded $5,000 for not filing an appeal and influencing the imposition of a non-custodial sentence.

He claimed that the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor's Office and a judge of the Court of Appeal were involved in the scheme, and described other cases of receiving undue advantage. The prosecutor also used foul language and disrespected the State Flag of Ukraine.

The money was never handed over to the prosecutor, and two months later, the appellate court handed down a sentence of probation for the defendant. The intern did not pass the audio recording to third parties, but it ended up in the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, after which the management filed a disciplinary complaint against Omelchenko.

Omelchenko himself confirmed the fact of the conversation, explaining his statements by alcohol intoxication. Later, when it became clear that he might be dismissed, he sent a letter to the KDPC claiming that he was allegedly blackmailed by SBU officers, attaching screenshots of calls and correspondence, the content of which does not confirm any facts. Omelchenko had been working in the prosecutor's office since 2015.

Also in June, judge Oleksandr Savin from Mykolaiv region was suspended from his job for refusing to take a test for intoxication and for regular violations of the law. He had previously been reprimanded for failing to comply with the rules of financial control and ethics.
