Odesa residents reported on social media that the ice that has been clogging the city's roads and sidewalks has already caused at least three deaths.

Intent asked the Main Department of the National Police in Odesa Oblast and the Odesa Municipality to confirm these cases.

The police reported that they had received information about the death of a man on Kanatna Street. A passer-by called 102. The man felt unwell, fell and died. An ambulance arrived and pronounced him dead. The preliminary cause of death was a heart attack. No other cases have been reported so far.

In turn, the mayor 's office reported that the leadership of the Odesa City Military Administration and the City Council conducted a joint inspection of the city's districts. The purpose of the visit was to check the quality of snow removal, ice removal and general sanitary conditions. During the tour, they inspected the work of housing and communal services, district administrations and utilities.

Ice is a thin layer of ice on the earth's surface that forms after rain or thaw when the temperature drops; also a transparent layer of ice formed as a result of freezing of drizzle or rain drops on the surface of the earth or objects at temperatures from 0 to 6 degrees Celsius. Ice formation requires a change in temperature, as water does not freeze at positive temperatures, and at constant minus temperatures, water freezes in the air and falls as snow and frost.

Meanwhile, the Black Sea and Azov Sea Hydrometeorological Center warned of dangerous meteorological phenomena of the first level of danger on February 7, namely ice and fog, which will limit visibility to 200-500 meters.

On February 6, Odesa experienced a rare atmospheric phenomenon. It was freezing rain in the city: water droplets falling on the cold ground instantly turned into a transparent ice crust.

The winter of 2026 was more severe for Odesa Oblast than last year. There were significant cold snaps and snowfall. On the night of January 31, as predicted by weather forecasters, the weather in the Odesa region deteriorated - the temperature dropped and it started to snow. Difficult weather conditions across almost the entire Odesa region resulted in wire breaks and damage to power grid elements due to ice freezing. Residents in Podolsk, Berezovsk, Rozdilnyansky, Belgorod-Dniester and Odesa districts were left without electricity.
