In March, at about 10:30 a.m. in the center of Odesa, an unknown person shot several times at Demian Hanul, who died on the spot from his wounds. The murder suspect was detained the same day, and the weapon allegedly used in the crime was found in his apartment. In May, the Prymorskyi District Court of Odesa began hearing the case of Mykola Mayorenko, who is accused of attempting to kill two civil society activists, businessman Gennadiy Beibutyan and Demyan Hanul.

At the same time, in November, 46-year-old Serhiy Shalaev, accused of killing Hanul, addressed the relatives of the deceased during a court hearing on November 3, apologized and stated that he had been misled about the activist's identity.
