Deputies of the Mykolaiv Regional Council supported the change of the regional coat of arms. The new symbol of the region will be a variant with the image of St. Nicholas.
The decision was made during a session on April 16.
Two versions were put forward for consideration: one with St. Nicholas and one with elements of ancient heritage related to the ancient settlement of Olbia.
During the discussion, MP Kateryna Stokolias suggested finalizing the design and possibly combining both concepts. According to her, the history of Mykolaiv region is much broader and is not limited to just one symbol.
At the same time, some deputies emphasized that the version with St. Nicholas is more understandable and closer to the residents of the region.
In particular, deputies Ihor Savchenko and Vladyslav Martychenko noted that the majority of residents they interviewed supported this option.
A different position was expressed by supporters of the Olbia option. MP Ruslan Peresunko emphasized the importance of Scythian and ancient heritage as part of the region's identity.
After discussion, the deputies voted for both options separately. As a result, the majority supported the coat of arms with St. Nicholas - 41 deputies voted in favor, 1 voted against. The option with Olbia received significantly fewer votes.
