Mykolaiv may receive €14 million grant for solar power plants and heating stations

Mykolaiv may receive more than EUR 14 million in grant assistance from NEFCO to install individual heating stations and build three solar power plants. All funds will go directly to the contractors, without the participation of the city budget.

At the city council session, the city council decided to attract two grants from the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO)

EUR 7.2 million is to be raised for the installation of individual heating points in residential buildings, which will provide more efficient, economical, and comfortable heating for residents.

Another €7.2 million will be used to build three solar power plants with a capacity of 9.9 MW each, a significant step towards the city's energy independence. The total investment amounted to more than EUR 14 million. Funding will go directly to the contractors, without involving the city budget or utility companies.

In addition, the Mykolaiv City Council approved two grant agreements with the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) to finance projects to modernize the city's water supply system. The total amount of support is EUR 13.37 million.

The first agreement, dated April 23, 2024, provides €6.17 million for the implementation of the project "Financial and Environmental Optimization of a Part of the Water Supply System", which aims to reduce the volume of so-called unprofitable water, i.e. losses in the networks.

The second agreement, dated August 15, 2024, provides €7.2 million for the reconstruction of water supply in one of the city's districts as part of a similar project.

Back in February 2024, deputies of the Mykolaiv City Council supported the decision to attract a grant from the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) to implement a project to optimize water supply in one of the city's districts. In July, NEFCO increased the amount of funding to €14.4 million, and in September signed a new grant agreement with the city authorities for the reconstruction of networks in the Korabelnyi district.

The need to upgrade the water supply system arose in April 2022, when Russian missile attacks destroyed the main water supply line that ran through the occupied territory of Kherson region. As a result, Mykolaiv has been living with an unstable water supply for more than two years.
