The epidemic season of 2024-2025 in Mykolaiv has been much more severe than the previous one, with doctors noting an increase in the number of patients with severe flu and serious complications.

According to the Health Department of Mykolaiv City Council, the respiratory season is ongoing in Mykolaiv, and the incidence of influenza and ARVI remains high. Over the past week, 2,757 cases were recorded in the city, and 79 patients were hospitalized.

The Center for Infectious Disease Treatment operates at City Hospital No. 5, which currently has 35 patients with influenza and ARVI, including pregnant women and young people. Since the beginning of the year, 219 patients have been treated in the department.

The head of the Center, Lyudmyla Pikhtereva, said that the current epidemic season is much more severe than the previous one. The number of patients with severe complications has increased, and influenza B dominates among the viruses, replacing Covid-19.

"This season is much heavier than the last one. More patients with influenza have severe cases, often caused by influenza B, although at the beginning of the year we diagnosed mainly influenza A. There are many cases of bacterial superinfection, atypical pneumonia. Quite a few young people, including the military, are sick," the doctor explained.

According to her, severe cases are often associated with late seeking medical care and improper use of antibiotics. She emphasizes that the best protection is vaccination, which significantly reduces the risk of complications and death.

The Infectious Disease Treatment Center has been operating since 2020. The facility is equipped with 30 beds, including intensive care units, a modern oxygen supply system, and isolated wards to reduce the risk of cross-infection.

Meanwhile, during the episode of "Intent.Insight", we discussed the epidemic situation in Odesa with Olena Kolodenko, director of the Primary Health Care Center №3.
