Voznesensk Mayor Yevhen Velychko has been released from custody on bail of 565,700 UAH. This decision was made by the court after a fatal accident in Kirovograd region that killed the driver of another car. Despite his status as a suspect, the mayor plans to return to his duties.
This was reported on Saturday, January 31, by Suspilne with reference to lawyer Igor Prytykin.
According to lawyer Prytykin, Velichko's bail was posted on Friday, January 30. After the money was transferred to the court's account, the mayor left the jail. The lawyer said that Velychko continues to perform the duties of the mayor and has an obligation to help the family affected by the accident.
Yevhen Velychko has been the mayor of Voznesensk since October 2020. He won the election as a candidate of the Servant of the People party. Prior to that, Velychko was an entrepreneur in the construction industry.
As a reminder, on January 28, near the village of Pushkove in Kirovohrad region, Velychko, driving a Toyota Camry, collided with a Renault Megane driven by a man born in 1986. According to prosecutor Dmytro Babenko, the mayor drove into the oncoming lane, killing the driver on the spot and injuring two other passengers. At the same time, the mayor was alone in the car and did not need hospitalization.
On the same day, the police detained the mayor and notified him of suspicion of violating traffic safety rules, which caused the death of a person (part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). On January 30, the Podilskyi District Court of Kropyvnytskyi imposed a pre-trial restraint in the form of detention with the possibility of bail in the amount of UAH 565,760.
Velychko explained the accident by difficult weather conditions, such as fog. However, he emphasized that he believes the suspicion is reasonable and is cooperating with the investigation. He also noted that he had helped the victims of the accident.
