The head of the Patrol Police Department of the National Police of Ukraine, Yevhen Zhukov, has resigned after a high-profile shooting incident in Kyiv.

He made the announcement during a press conference.

According to Zhukov, he made the decision to resign personally.

"As a combat officer, I decided to submit a report for dismissal from the position I hold. I think it will be fair," he said.

The resignation took place amidst a scandal over the actions of patrol police officers who arrived at the scene of the shooting, but left their position after the shots were fired and did not help the wounded.

Zhukov sharply criticized their actions, calling them "unprofessional and unworthy."

According to him, the policemen did not understand the situation and actually left civilians in danger.

"This is a very shameful incident. An internal investigation will be conducted, and all managers will be held accountable for these actions," he emphasized.

An internal investigation into the incident is currently underway.

As a reminder, Yevhen Zhukov, call sign Marshal, was the commander of a separate reconnaissance airborne company of the Mykolaiv 79th Airmobile Brigade. He was promoted from platoon commander to deputy battalion commander. He participated in the ATO and the defense of Donetsk airport.

Yevhen Zhukov began his life as a professional military man - he chose to study at the Odesa Institute of Land Forces, and after graduation, from 2007 to 2015, he served in the 79th separate airmobile brigade, leading combat units.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2014, Yevhen's unit has been performing various combat missions in the hottest spots.

Under Zhukov's leadership in 2014, the consolidated unit held the Donetsk airport, and despite numerous terrorist attacks, constant shelling of the airport by enemy artillery and tanks, the group managed to hold its positions and inflict significant losses on enemy manpower.

In 2014, Yevhen Zhukov was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III class, and in 2015, the Order of the People's Hero of Ukraine for personal courage and heroism in the defense of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, loyalty to the military oath, and high professionalism.

In November 2015, experienced military officer Yevhen Zhukov, known by his call sign Marshal, a heroic paratrooper and one of the "cyborg" defenders of Donetsk airport, was appointed Head of the Patrol Police Department.

He received a personal badge number 00079 in honor of the 79th Air Assault Brigade.
