The investigation into the case of Bashtanka Mayor Oleksandr Berehovoi is officially over. Law enforcement officers suspect the official of embezzling budget funds when purchasing ammunition for the military in 2022. Currently, the investigator is asking the court to limit the time for the defense to familiarize itself with the case file, arguing that it is a deliberate delay in the process on their part.

Nikcenter wrote about this with reference to the decision of the Bashtanka District Court.

Despite the completion of the investigation in early December 2025, the process of familiarization with 20 volumes of the case has stalled. The investigation accused the defense of sabotage: while the suspect was studying the materials, his lawyers hardly ever appeared for familiarization.

The defense appealed to the lack of light, long distance and involvement in other processes, but the judge recognized such actions as a delay. As a result, the court set a final deadline of February 20, 2026. As a reminder, Berehovoi is charged with embezzlement of funds for the purchase of unsuitable military uniforms, which is part of a large-scale investigation into embezzlement in Mykolaiv region worth UAH 364 million.

The mayor of Bashtanka , Oleksandr Berehovoi , was removed from office by the Bashtanka District Court on September 9, 2025, at the request of the investigator. He is suspected of embezzling budget funds during the purchase of military uniforms and shoes for a military unit in December 2022.

Berehovoi filed an appeal, as he believes that the decision to suspend him was formal, and the conclusions about the need to extend his suspension were based on assumptions rather than evidence. His defense lawyer insisted that all risks of possible influence on the investigation had already been eliminated by the previous preventive measure.
