Police detained a foreigner who committed a fatal road accident while intoxicated in the Peresypskyi district of Odesa.

According to the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast, it has been preliminarily established that a 32-year-old foreigner, driving a Volkswagen Golf, collided with a 54-year-old motorcyclist who was moving ahead and stopped at a red light.

Doctors tried to resuscitate the motorcyclist at the scene, but unfortunately, he died. The police tested the driver of the car for intoxication - the Drager device showed 1.3 ppm of alcohol.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was from Italy, and among other things, they found a Ministry of Defense press card that allows him to move around the city during curfews and in the combat zone.

Investigators of the Road Accident Investigation Team of the Odesa Region Main Directorate of the National Police registered the incident in the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. It is a violation of the rules of road safety or operation of transport by a person driving a vehicle in a state of intoxication, which caused the death of the victim.

The suspect was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The issue of serving him a notice of suspicion is being settled.

In June, a traffic accident occurred on the Odesa-Mykolaiv highway near the village of Malovarvarivka, Mykolaiv district, in which four people were injured.

Last year, Odesa region was among the three regions with the highest number of accidents committed by drunk drivers - 7,073 reports, second only to Dnipro (8,745) and Kyiv (8,176). At the same time, the Prosecutor General's Office opened more than a thousand criminal proceedings for such offenses, which is 11% more than in 2023.
