In the Odesa region, a deserter blew up police officers and himself

Two patrol officers and a civilian they had stopped were hospitalized after a grenade exploded.  

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in the Odesa region.

Preliminary findings indicate that a patrol police response team stopped a moped rider for violating traffic rules. While checking his documents, the officers discovered that the 52-year-old man was a soldier who had deserted his unit. He then pulled out a grenade and began threatening to use it. An explosion occurred. As a result of the explosion, two police officers and the offender himself were injured. An investigative team from the local police department is working at the scene. 

Meanwhile, the Izmail City and District Court in Odesa Oblast sentenced a man to life in prison for shooting and killing a police officer in the city of Izmail in August 2025. The man was charged under several articles; he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for intentional murder, four years for illegal possession of a firearm, four more years for the illegal modification of a firearm, and finally, life imprisonment for the murder of a law enforcement officer.

Thetragicincident occurredon August 5, 2025, around 6:00 p.m. in Izmail. On the outskirts of Izmail, officers from the patrol police response unit stopped a 45-year-old moped driver to check his documents. The man behaved aggressively, pulled out a gun, and began firing at the police officers. As a result, one of the officers was wounded. In response, the officer fired his service weapon and wounded the attacker. Both were hospitalized. The senior police lieutenant died in the hospital.
