The Mykolaiv region has recorded the lowest birth-to-death ratio ever among Ukraine's southern regions.

These figures were published on the OpenDataBot platform.

According to the Ministry of Justice, 73,292 children were born in Ukraine during the first half of 2026. At the same time, 259,853 deaths were recorded. In other words, the death rate is 3.5 times higher than the birth rate.

After Mykolaiv Oblast, the largest disparity was recorded in Kherson Oblast: in six months, only 166 children were born there, while 2,274 people died. That’s nearly 14 deaths for every newborn.

In the Odesa region, 5,450 children were born during the first half of the year, while 17,389 people died. The ratio is approximately 3.2 deaths per newborn, which is one of the best figures among the southern regions.

Overall in Ukraine, compared to the first half of 2025, the number of newborns decreased by 16%. Compared to data from before the full-scale war, the number has halved.

Slightly more boys are being born: 51% compared to 49% girls.

Previously, Intent reported that the demographic situation in southern Ukraine is rapidly deteriorating, and the mortality rate significantly exceeds the birth rate. In February of last year, the worst figures were recorded in the Kherson region, where there were eleven deaths for every newborn.

The Odesa region ranked fourth in Ukraine and first among the southern regions in terms of the number of newborns in the first half of 2025.
