In Mykolaiv Oblast, a community will restrict the use of electric scooters

The South Ukrainian City Territorial Community is set to regulate the use of electric scooters.

This became known during a meeting of the city council’s executive committee following an appeal to police representatives.

During the discussion, it was noted that electric scooters are currently being left in parking areas and even on the roadway. Separately, members of the executive committee drew attention to the fact that young children are using them, which could pose a threat to traffic safety.

A police representative proposed forming a working group consisting of representatives from city authorities and Police Precinct No. 3 to establish specific guidelines for the use of electric scooters in the community.

Specifically, the working group is to develop rules regarding:

• locations where electric scooters will be permitted;
• areas where their use may be prohibited;
• permissible speed limits;
• age restrictions for users.

As examples, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk were cited during the meeting, where zones for electric scooter use have already been designated and certain restrictions are in place. Community representatives plan to study the experiences of other Ukrainian cities in order to implement rules that will not impose unnecessary restrictions on residents but will, at the same time, improve road safety.

The issue of electric scooter parking was discussed separately. A police representative proposed creating special parking spots for them in the city. According to him, a similar initiative is already in place in Voznesensk. This proposal was supported during the meeting, and it was suggested to further explore the possibility of implementing it through the municipal services department.

Meeting participants also noted that the issue of electric scooter use is not yet sufficiently regulated at the national level. Therefore, the working group must take into account current legislation and possible future changes regarding the status of electric scooters as vehicles.

Following the discussion, the proposal to establish a working group was approved. The group is tasked with determining next steps and developing specific solutions regarding the operation and parking of electric scooters within the community.
