In Kherson, since the beginning of 2026, 17 employees of a transportation company have been wounded and two others have been killed as a result of Russian shelling. Despite the constant threat of attacks, drivers continue to transport passengers.
Vadym Melnyk, director of the municipal enterprise “Khersonkomtransservice,” spoke about this in a report by “Suspilne Kherson.”
Drivers work in body armor and helmets, use drone detectors, and monitor reports of drone sightings. If the device signals danger, they try to drop off passengers in a safe place.
Some drivers have been caught in Russian attacks on multiple occasions. One of them said that during one of the shellings, he was wounded in both legs. Another trolleybus driver was able to spot a drone in time and stop the vehicle, preventing any injuries to the passengers.
Since the beginning of the year, Russian attacks in Kherson have also damaged 10 buses and five trolleybuses beyond repair. Efforts are underway to repair the remaining damaged vehicles and return them to service.
Previously, the windows of public buses in Kherson were covered with bulletproof film to reduce the risk of passengers being injured by shards of glass during Russian attacks.
In addition, there were plans to install tablets and monitors inside the buses to display information about air raid alerts and the direction of Russian drones.
