Illegal Fishing in Mykolaiv: Man Caught with 112K in Damages

In Mykolaiv, police exposed a man who was illegally fishing on the Ingul River with prohibited gear. While patrolling the city, inspectors of the police unit noticed a fisherman on the water who was using a spinning rod with a barbed hook and using a prohibited fishing method - barging.

This was reported by the press service of the National Police in Mykolaiv region.

An investigative team from Police Station No. 1 and a state inspector of the fisheries patrol arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officers seized 36 fish of various species (crucian carp, carp, silver carp) from the offender. According to preliminary estimates, the damage caused to the state amounts to almost UAH 112 thousand. All illegally caught fish and fishing gear were confiscated.

Investigators opened criminal proceedings over the illegal fishing under Part 1 of Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of this article provides for punishment in the form of a fine or restraint of liberty for up to three years. The investigation is currently underway, and law enforcement officers have ordered an expert examination.

Earlier, Intent wrote that during a raid on the Southern Bug River near one of the villages of the Olshanska community in Mykolaiv district, law enforcement officers exposed men who were illegally fishing and crayfishing.

The police reminded that from December 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, there is a ban on catching river crayfish in fishery water bodies in Mykolaiv region. Catching river crayfish during the ban is punishable by administrative fines to criminal liability, as well as compensation for damage to the fishery.

Also in Odesa region, three men violated fishing regulations and caused UAH 710 thousand in damage to the state. The first offender was caught on Putryne Lake. Two more offenders were detained on Lake Yalpug. Residents of the Safianivka community caught 65 fish with nets, including pike, carp, perch, ram, crucian carp, bream and silver carp.
