High Council of Justice agrees to keep judge from Reni in custody

The High Council of Justice has agreed to keep in custody a judge of the Reniiskyi District Court of Odesa Region, who was detained on March 5.

According to the Center for Public Investigations, citing the HCJ press service, the decision was made after reviewing a petition filed by Deputy Prosecutor General Maksym Krym.

The judge is suspected of extortion and bribery, and the High Council of Justice decided that the motives given in the submission against him are reasonable, supported by the materials provided, which contain specific facts and evidence that may indicate that he committed a socially dangerous act defined by the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The judge of the Reniiskyi District Court of Odesa Oblast was detained by the Security Service of Ukraine on suspicion of receiving an undue advantage as part of a case of fraud and receiving an undue advantage on suspicion of taking a bribe.

According to the investigation, on January 29, the Reni District Court received materials on bringing the driver to administrative responsibility and resolving the issue of tobacco products without excise tax stamps seized from him. During the conversation with the applicant, the judge offered to make a decision on the return of the seized property in exchange for an illegal benefit. He hinted at the transfer of funds in foreign currency (euros), noting that the applicant should be interested in it to avoid confiscation. The judge was detained while receiving 800 euros and 300 US dollars.

Meanwhile, the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine found judge Lyudmyla Saltan of the Kyiv District Court of Odesa guilty of taking a bribe. She was sentenced to 6 years' imprisonment with disqualification to hold public office for 3 years. The court also partially confiscated her privately owned property: a residential building with a total area of 451.4 square meters in Odesa region and an AUDI Q8 car.
