Heating Radiators for Standalone and Centralized Systems: What's the Difference?

The type of system determines the requirements for the strength, operating pressure, and material of the heating devices. When selecting radiators for an apartment or house, you should consider the heat transfer fluid parameters, the connection layout, and the room’s square footage. A model that works effectively with an individual boiler isn’t always suitable for a centralized heating system with pressure fluctuations.

Features of a standalone heating system

In a standalone system, the owner controls the temperature, pressure, and quality of the heat transfer fluid. The operating pressure in such systems is typically 1.5–3 bar, so the load on the radiators is moderate. This broadens the selection of materials and designs.

For private homes, aluminum, steel panel, or tubular models are often used. Aluminum sections heat up quickly and have a heat output of approximately 150–200 W per section, depending on height and design. Steel panel models contain one to three heating panels, so their power can exceed 2,000 watts.

Before purchasing, you should compare several parameters. The main characteristics affect the device’s efficiency and service life:

Requirements for a Centralized System

In multi-story buildings, the system pressure can range from 6 to 10 bar and may rise even higher during system testing. An additional risk is water hammer—a sudden pressure surge after starting the pumps or opening the valves. Because of this, the radiator must be able to withstand the load with a margin of safety.

Bimetallic models are often chosen for central heating systems. They feature a steel core inside, while the external aluminum fins quickly transfer heat to the air. Many models are rated for an operating pressure of 16–25 bar, but the exact value should be checked in the technical specifications.

Cast-iron radiators are less sensitive to the quality of the coolant and retain heat for a long time after the supply is turned off. At the same time, they are heavy, heat up more slowly, and require sturdy mounting. Aluminum models are suitable for centralized heating systems only if the manufacturer specifies compatibility with this type of system.
